Fermo and Ascoli are the main cities of the Piceno which are definitely worth a visit.
With its 30 centuries of history Fermo is an important destination for art and culture lovers with its Piazza del Popolo, Palazzo dei Priori, the gothic cathedral, palaces. museums and the impressive Teatro dell'Aquila. Of particular historical interest are the Roman cisterns built under the old town as well as the library which is the largest in the Marche ranking among the first 10 in Italy.
Moving from Fermo to its historical rival Ascoli, known also as the City of the One Hundred Towers, you will discover another stunning Piazza del Popolo with the Church of San Francesco, the Palazzo dei Capitani and the famous Caffè Meletti while in Piazza Arringo you will find The Cathedral of S. Emidio, patron of Ascoli. Walking around the city you can admire the western wall with the medieval gateway, the Roman bridge and superb baroque palaces and churches built using the local travertine stone which gives Ascoli its unique and harmonious appearance |
